You guys pay paypal, I enter it into a spreadsheet, and life goes on. But I was getting tired of that, plus who wants to have to deal with paypal? Anyway, a new system has been implemented that lets us accept credit cards directly, for slightly less fees than paypal. And it's all automated as well. If you have an automatic paypal subscription, thank you, and that will still continue to work fine. You can switch if you want, but it's not required. The rest of you, if at all possible, please sign up for the automatic payments. It saves everyone a lot of work (well mostly me. I'm lazy and don't like work). http://acemonstertoys.org/membership It's tied to your website account, so you'll need to log into that first. If anyone has any questions / problems, please let me know. I tested it on myself, charging my own CC etc, and it seemed to work, but the monkey who coded this thing may have left some bugs, so I want to keep an eye on it at the beginning here. -David Rorex AMT Treasurer & code monkey -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have a row of three desks in the corner which don't need to be there (well, other than mine, at the moment, it seems). That space combined with the vacumn table space means we could make a much better dedicated electronics area and space for people to hack on the north end of the room separate from the central conference tables. Google Maps will dump you at our front door. The trick has been, for some people, dialing us from the door, which rings our Skype extension in the space. It has gone offline on occasion. Someone not on a phone can point you towards the dues section of the website but the normal rate is $80 a month and $40 for the "starving hacker" rate meant for the unemployed or students. Generally, you can reliably find people at our weekly meetings after 7:30 on Thursdays. Depending on the week, there are other regular events, which are listed on our website. If anyone stops by the space before then, please please pick up a few things here and there, take out some trash, etc. If everyone does a little bit, it should clean up nicely. http://www.meetup.com/Ace-Monster-Toys/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... So I'm planning to give it a try again next week. I posted it on this newfangled meatup thing, please RSVP if you'd like to come: http://www.meetup.com/Ace-Monster-Toys/events/28986041/ Same plan as last time, walk through using Eagle to draw a schematic, lay out a PCB, create custom parts, and then submitting it for fabrication. Dunno if we'll get through all the topics, if not we can continue at the next meeting. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's more like just saying the space is open during such and such predictable time periods that non-members can come and make use of it. Several members use the space regularly during the week, I think it's a good idea for them to commit to specific hours during the week that they will be there, so non-members know it's open to them to visit. I just added myself to be there starting at 6pm before my class & the weekly meetings, since I'm generally always there beforehand. Stefan, Costa, Mike, are your schedules regular enough that you can say in advance what times you'll be at the space? I know you guys are there a couple times a week usually, right? If each of you could commit to a block of hours once a week, we'd have things pretty filled out. Maybe we can get some one from a local HAM group to help put too. I'm probably going to buy this book: http://books.google.com/books?id=nyEhKQEACAAJ . This looks like the preferred study guide for the Technician class license. There is also http://www.radioexam.org/ which has free practice tests that supposedly have the actual questions from the exam. According to the ARRL site there are a couple places nearby giving tests in September. I think the test cost about $15. I've wanted to get a HAM license for some time. Now one of my new interests (FPV R/C planes) kinda crosses over, some of the radio telemetry equipment technically requires licensing to operate. Oh, and you can frequently take two tries in the same day. So it isn't hard to pass. It's frequently much harder to figure out how to use ham frequencies to legally do what you want to do in the real world. Only some of that is covered in the test. If you're willing to wait until mid september I can give a class. I have a 90 minute talk on how to rules-lawyer the test, memorizing enough to pass. I used to give it to unprepared folks at breakfast, then they'd go out & they'd pass the test at noon. It's a bit out of date, some of the RF safety and frequency questions have changed. If folks are interested, I'll find & update it. Myles On Aug 17, 2011, at 12:01 PM, slick wrote: > e one from a local HAM group to help put too. I think it went well, and I hope people learned some useful info on getting started with PCB design. Here are the tutorials we went through (we only got through the first two). I recommend reading through the entire things, I sort of skimmed through them, and there is lots of important information, warnings, tips, that I didn't mention http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/108 - schematics http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/109 - board layout http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/110 - creating custom library parts (we didn't get to this one) In addition to the Sparkfun eagle part library (linked from the first tutorial), I've collected a ton of more eagle libraries from various sources. You can download them from my github here: https://github.com/davr/Eagle-Libraries Links to sources for electronic components, and at the bottom, PCB manufacturers: http://wiki.acemonstertoys.org/Category:Suppliers If you're in the meetup group, but not on our official mailing list, you might like to join. We don't really use the meetup mailing list for much. You can sign up here: http://lists.acemonstertoys.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss As a reminder, we have a general meeting tonight at 7:30pm (as with every Thursday night). Next week on Tuesday night at 7:30pm is python class, and Wednesday night at 7pm is a meetup on building R/C planes & drones. We also are accepting members to Ace Monster Toys, for $80/month ($40 for students/unemployed/etc), you get a key & 24/7 access to our space and our equipment. We are a non-profit, the money goes solely towards paying rent, bills, buying new equipment, etc. Feel free to email me if you have any questions! Well, fear not, here it is, real online education in the form of the Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/#computer-science). While mostly the videos are geared towards younger students learning high school-level science and mathematics, there is a fairly decent section on programming in Python. I've watched a number of the videos and his style is very easy to follow. The lessons come highly recommended from other sources as well, so you don't have to take my word for it. The material comprehensively covers a lot of the more computer sciencey bits of programming, and less of the practical aspect (but that's still important!). You'll recognize a bunch of things I might have explained poorly in previous classes, so if you want someone competent explaining variable binding and stack calls, this is the place to go. I assume there will be a mix of skill levels, and I don't want to force people who came last time to sit through a repeat of the same exact topics. An informal workshop on learning to design your own PCB (printed circuit boards) for your electronics projects. No longer will you have to deal with unreliable solderless breadboards or spend hours soldering millions of connecting wires on perfboards. Draw up a circuit, send it to an inexpensive manufacturer, and then solder down your components, and have a working device! I'll be going through the basics of: * Schematic Capture -- drawing the circuit * Board Layout -- placing the components on the board, routing the connections (will compare manual routing, eagle autorouting, and freerouting's autorouting) * Creating custom parts -- often the part you want on your board isn't already in eagle's library, you'll need to create a custom part * Submitting designs for fabrication -- I recommend laen's PCB service *When:* Tomorrow night, Wednesday 7-9pm *Where:* Ace Monster Toys Global Headquarters, 6050 Lowell St #214, Oakland, 94608 *Cost:* FREE *What to bring:* A laptop, with CADSOFT's Eagle installed (download link). Supports Windows, Macs, and Linux. Free version is limited to boards that are 4"x3", but that is enough for 99% of hobbyist designs (larger PCBs start getting expensive to produce anyway). * * * * *Additional useful files to download in advance*: Libraries of pre-created parts: https://github.com/sparkfun/SparkFun-Eagle-Library https://github.com/davr/Eagle-Libraries Misc files: http://content.laen.org/pcb/LaenPCBOrder.cam http://content.laen.org/pcb/LaenPCBOrder.dru http://vps2.davr.org/eagle/eagle_misc.zip Tutorials saved into PDF format: http://vps2.davr.org/eagle/eagle_tutorials.zip Tutorials on the web: http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/108 http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/109 http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/110 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
