We have set this up specially to welcome our friends from other hackerspaces, because we want to help build better community with fellow bay-area hackerspace friends! Please look for a large white bus with the destination "Portola" written on the front. It will hold about 30 passengers. We will attempt to put some sort of other signage on the bus to make it easily identifiable. Here are some photos of it https://plus.google.com/109093596230432873291/posts/FUQWFJekUDP If you are north of Mountain View your final train will be at 10:49PM. That is admittedly kinda shitty, so consider crashing down here! If you are south of Mountain View your final train will be at 1:09AM. Trains will go back and forth from the station during the evening. If you want to signal you are coming on a certain train please tweet to #hackerpartydd and we'll try to get somebody to answer you. The bus will totally go for last trains, and for other trips depending on interest and the number of sober bus drivers who are not yet sick of our shit. We encourage awesome people to generally collaborate on the hashtag #hackerpartydd so that everybody can get home safely or find a safe nap place to sober up. I've been on a very long road trip with my partner Jamie where we just passed our one year mark at the end of August. We're currently visiting hacker/makerspaces putting on workshops traveling on our current leg from Austin to the West Coast by way of Dallas, TX, Norman, OK, Denver/Boulder, CO, SLC/Provo, UT, Las Vegas, NV, Los Angeles, CA, San Diego, and a few other cities in California. At the current rate of travel we plan to be in your area around the 28th of October. We'd love to know if it's possible for us to come by Ace Monster Toys for a tour while we're in town to check it out. Also as we're traveling we've been putting on our workshop titled College of Lockpicking (http://www.collegeoflockpicking.com). In the workshop we discuss the history of locks and how they relate to modern locks. Then we teach everyone how to pick locks! It's a lot of fun and so far everyone in our workshops have opened a lock! We're keen on doing the College of Lockpicking workshop at Ace Monster Toys since friends said we should really put one on there at Ace Monster Toys. Anyway we can't wait to hear back from everyone at Ace Monster Toys. Cheers, Eric. In the meantime, please don't use the current flyers unless you sharpie'd in the correct QR or placed a correct QR sticker on top of the old one. We didn't end up having any workshops at AMT, but we'd love to someday soon. Everyone had a great time, and now it's time for Workshop Weekend #2. We're trying to make this weekend feel more like an event, so we're going to try running it at just one location. Workshop Weekend #2 will be November 5 & 6 at Tech Liminal in Oakland (5 minutes' walk from 12th St. BART). We're still focusing on DIY-type workshops (e.g., Arduino, programming, crafting, manufacturing, etc.) but we're also flexible - if you have a great workshop idea, don't hesitate to ask. Space is limited, so please RSVP asap if you'd like to participate, this workshop is replacing our general meeting next week. If you're a member of AMT, you get a discount, so now's a good time to sign up if you're not already ;) Full details below: --- You can pick your friends. You can pick your beer. But can you pick... a Lock? Join us on Thursday, October 27th, from 7-9pm, as we embark on an ancient mechanical adventure to explore the inner workings of a modern lock, first developed by the Mesopotamians and Egyptians over 4000 years ago. Led by lockpickers Eric Michaud and Jamie Schwettmann, this workshop will cover - soup to nuts - everything you need to know about how common locks work... and how to pick them open. Whether you're a complete novice curious to find out what pin-tumbler really means, a homeowner protecting your family's treasures, or a veteran lockpicker with questions about advanced locks and techniques, this event is for you! With 2 solid hours of history, mechanical diagrams ("lock pr0n"), and hands-on lockpicking instruction... first we'll open your minds, and then we'll open some locks! To properly learn this ancient art, you'll need the proper tools. By registering for a ticket with a lockpick set, this guarantees you a seat at the workshop, and reserves - all for you - a brand-new 10-piece custom lockpick set by Southern Specialties, hand-picked by Eric and Jamie to maximize utility for beginners and locksport enthusiasts alike, and offered for only $30. If you already have some picks you're itching to practice with, you can bring them along, and your workshop cost is only $50! BONUS: Members of Ace Monster Toys get $15 off the registration price! Use code "AceMonster" to claim your discount at http://collegeoflockpicking.eventbrite.com -- if you're not a member and would like to become one (now's a s good a time as any!) The trends they mention are legit, and it looks like we will get some great balance of system gains in the next couple of years. Of course, I thought solyndra was going to be part of those gains. But 1) right now is in a glut of solar capacity (eu not buying, China plants/subsidy coming on line). So prices may not on a n accurate slope for prediction. 2) limits of producing silicon are being solved in all sorts of clever ways, which has helped cost a lot. That will only get better for a while. But what about the rare earth doping materials? Some of the solar companies use lots of tellurium &etc per panel. The limited amount in the earths crust starts driving up costs before their solar tech can scale to replace most fossil fuel. More nano tech will probably jump that hurdle, but I'm not sure it's a forgone conclusion. I think it is because they were just bought. http://www.sourcetreeapp.com/ -Aaron From biff at cliffle.com Fri Oct 28 19:51:07 2011 From: biff at cliffle.com (Cliff L. Power is in watts, joules per second. The joules do the melting; the "per second" is how fast. Speed is in meters per second. If you divide power by speed, you get joules per meter, which is how much energy you're laying down on a one-meter cut. In other words: If you've found a speed that works for, say, 20% power to cut your material, you can jigger it using this equation: old % / old speed = new % / new speed constrain new % to 95, and the laser is moving as fast as possible while delivering the amount of energy you need, assuming you haven't exceeded the maximum speed of the laser. If you have, constrain with the maximum speed, and you have your percent. To illustrate: If the laser is running at 50% power, and 10 m/s, it is delivering 40 watts (half the laser) of power. This means it puts 4 joules of energy into every meter of cut. If we make it run at 20 m/s, it delivers 2 joules per meter of energy; if we bump the power up to 100% (bad idea, bear with me) then we're back to pumping 4 joules into every meter. For most materials this should be the same cut. cheers, -Sam. PS This may be obvious to some, most, or all of you. That means you're a nerd of both the math and physics variety; congratulations(?) It doesn't look like it started out that way, but it's been stacked unevenly, so that it bends under its own weight. I rearranged the plywood so that most of it lays flat. As a result, if you have a piece of plywood with your name on it, it may be somewhere else now (but on the same shelf). We should try to ensure that plywood always lays flat. Warped plywood makes for crappy laser cuts. -- Cliff L. Biffle http://cliffle.com/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
